Is colon hydrotherapy safe?

The short answer: when it's performed by a certified therapist using registered, single-use disposable equipment, colon hydrotherapy is a gentle, low-risk wellness treatment for most healthy adults. Like any therapy it isn't right for everyone, which is why every first visit at our Caringbah and Newport clinics begins with a consultation and health questionnaire before treatment starts.

Built-in safeguards

What keeps the process safe

Licensed & single-use

Our clinics are council-licensed and use only single-use disposable supplies. The equipment and treatment room are thoroughly cleaned after every session.

Gentle, gravity-fed flow

Water is gravity-fed rather than pumped under pressure, and passes through UV and 5-micron filtration. An automatic temperature safety shut-off keeps it at a safe, regulated temperature throughout.

Low volume, controlled

A session uses less than 6 gallons, around 23 litres, of water in total, introduced gradually across the session rather than all at once.

Who's behind the treatment

Trained, certified therapists

Who performs your treatment matters as much as the equipment. Michelle King and Andrew Law have been certified colon hydrotherapists and instructors since 2003, hold certifications from I-ACT and the National Board for Colon Hydrotherapists (NBCHT, USA), and are Australia's only LIBBE-certified trainers. Together they've conducted tens of thousands of sessions, including running the colon hydrotherapy department at Tony Robbins' global events since 2004.

I-ACT, the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy, has set professional standards for the industry for over 35 years and works with regulators including the FDA, CE and the TGA. We also train and certify other therapists through our own I-ACT-affiliated school.

Is it normal to feel...?

Mild sensations are normal, not a warning sign

Some people feel mild cramping, gas or pressure as the water releases, and mild, temporary bloating on the day. None of this means something is wrong, it's a normal part of the process and passes quickly. For a full walkthrough of how a session feels start to finish, see what to expect at your first session.

Before you book

When to check with your doctor first

These aren't always reasons you can't have a session, but they're exactly what your therapist needs to know at your consultation, and in some cases your GP's clearance first.

  • You're pregnant or think you might be
  • Recent bowel, rectal or abdominal surgery
  • Severe or bleeding haemorrhoids
  • An active flare of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or diverticulitis
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Significant kidney or heart conditions
  • A colostomy or ileostomy
  • Suspected bowel obstruction or a known tumour

Always tell your therapist about your full health history at consultation, and speak with your GP first if you're unsure whether colon hydrotherapy is right for you.

How it compares

Safer on the bowel than laxatives or enemas

A colonoscopy is a diagnostic medical procedure performed by a doctor to look inside the colon. Colon hydrotherapy is a wellness treatment that gently hydrates the colon and supports its natural rhythm, using only filtered water, no drugs or chemicals.

An enema only reaches the lower rectal and sigmoid part of the colon, and repeated laxative use can irritate and weaken the bowel over time and become habit-forming. Colon hydrotherapy works gently along more of the colon without either of those downsides.

More questions

Safety questions we're often asked

Are there side effects?
Most people have no lasting side effects. On the day you may notice mild, temporary bloating, cramping or tiredness, which usually settles quickly. Drinking water and eating light, easily digestible food afterwards helps.
Can I have colon hydrotherapy while pregnant?
Pregnancy is generally considered a reason to avoid colon hydrotherapy. If you're pregnant or think you might be, please let us know before booking and speak with your GP first.
Is it safe for older adults?
Many older clients have colon hydrotherapy safely. As with every client, we go through your health history at consultation so your therapist can confirm it's appropriate for you.
Does it wash out good gut bacteria?
A common concern. To support your gut afterwards, every session finishes with a probiotic and an electrolyte drink, and we recommend light, nourishing food for the rest of the day.
How often is it safe to have?
This varies from person to person. Your therapist will recommend a schedule based on your goals and health history at your consultation, rather than a fixed rule for everyone.
Is it safe to combine with an infrared sauna?
Yes. Many clients enjoy an infrared sauna as part of their visit, in fact your first session includes one. Drinking water afterwards to stay hydrated is recommended.
