Colon hydrotherapy and constipation: an honest guide
If you feel backed up, sluggish, or you've quietly become reliant on laxatives to go, this article is for you. After more than twenty years in clinic we've sat across from thousands of people in exactly that spot. Here's an honest look at what constipation usually involves, how a colon hydrotherapy session works, what it can and cannot do, and when your GP needs to come first.
First, the basics
What's usually behind constipation
Before anyone books a session with us, it's worth being honest about where constipation usually comes from. In our experience it's rarely one thing.
Not enough fibre
Fibre gives the bowel something to work with. Modern diets heavy in processed food and light on vegetables, fruit and whole grains leave it with very little.
Not enough water
The colon's job includes reclaiming water. If you're not drinking enough, what's left behind gets dry and hard to move. It's the simplest fix on this list and the most skipped.
Not enough movement
Your bowel likes a body that moves. Long days sitting at a desk or in the car slow everything down, including digestion.
Routine & medications
Ignoring the urge because you're busy, travel, shift work, stress, and some common medications can all slow the bowel. If a medication changed things, that's a conversation for your GP.
How a session works
Warm water, introduced gently
During a session, warm filtered water flows gently into the colon and releases naturally, several times over about 45 minutes. On our LIBBE open system the water is gravity-fed rather than pumped under pressure, passes through UV and 5-micron filtration, and stays at a safe temperature with an automatic shut-off. The idea is simple: the water helps soften and release what the bowel is holding, and supports its natural rhythm of filling and emptying.
Every session finishes with a probiotic and an electrolyte drink. If you're curious how a visit actually feels from the moment you walk in, we've written a full walkthrough in what to expect at your first session.

The laxative cycle
Why we think water is kinder than laxatives
Plenty of our clients arrive after years of relying on laxatives. We're not here to shame anyone for that, they were doing what worked. But stimulant laxatives push the bowel chemically, they can irritate it over time, and for some people they become habit-forming, needing more to get the same result.
A colonic takes a different approach. It uses only water, no drugs, no stimulants, no chemicals, and works with the bowel's own rhythm rather than forcing it. We think that's a gentler way to support a sluggish bowel, though we'll say plainly that scientific research on colon hydrotherapy is limited and we can't promise it will work for you. One firm rule: never stop or change a prescribed medication because of anything you read here. That decision belongs with your GP.
At a glance
- Laxatives
- Chemical stimulation. Can irritate the bowel with ongoing use and become habit-forming for some people.
- A colonic
- Warm filtered water only, gravity-fed, working with the bowel's natural rhythm. About 45 minutes.
- Either way
- Neither is a substitute for fibre, water, movement and a GP's advice on persistent constipation.
The part that matters most
Relief on the day is common. Habits change the story.
Many clients tell us they leave a session feeling lighter and genuinely relieved. We love that. But we'd be doing you a disservice if we let you think a session once in a while fixes a bowel that's short on fibre, water and movement.
- At your consultation we talk food: simple, realistic fibre swaps, not a punishing diet
- We talk water: how much you're actually drinking versus what your bowel needs
- We talk movement and routine: small daily changes that keep things moving
- Your therapist suggests a session plan built around you, never a fixed package pitch
- Single session $120, or series pricing from 3 sessions for $300, on our pricing page
- Your first visit is $145 all-inclusive: consultation, colonic, infrared sauna and probiotic
Before you book anything
When constipation needs your doctor, not us
Most constipation is about lifestyle. Occasionally it's the body flagging something that needs proper medical care. If any of these apply, please see your GP promptly first, before booking anything with us.
- Blood in your stool
- Unexplained weight loss
- Severe or worsening abdominal pain
- A persistent, unexplained change in your bowel habits
- Fever alongside your symptoms
- Constipation that started suddenly with no obvious cause
We ask about all of this at your consultation anyway, and we will always send you to your doctor first when that's the right call.
